Anthropic has entered the crowded market of AI agents with the release of Claude Duet, a tool designed specifically for professionals and small businesses. The company is positioning this new software as a distinct alternative to the wave of personal assistants currently dominating the news cycle. Rather than focusing on casual user interactions, Duet aims to manage complex tasks and automate workflows for working users.
The primary differentiator for this product is its reliance on a vast ecosystem of third-party tools. According to Anthropic, the agent can connect to more than 6,000 different connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace. This extensive integration capability allows the system to interact with a wide range of professional software and services, which is central to its business-focused design.
The company is making a clear distinction between Duet and other agents like Instinct or Meta Muse. Anthropic notes that Duet is not intended for handling personal errands, such as booking tickets or running household tasks. It also does not display its browser activity in real time, a feature found in some competing products. Instead, the agent focuses on building daily briefings, creating data dashboards, and suggesting actions based on the user's existing information.
Under the hood, Duet operates on the Claude Opus 5.5 model. It functions by performing tasks in the background within its own virtual machine. This allows users to continue their work while the agent processes information. If the agent encounters a step that requires specific input or approval, it will pause and return to the user for confirmation before proceeding.
The launch of Duet coincides with a broader industry shift from simple AI chatbots to autonomous agents that can act on a user's behalf. Many of Anthropic's competitors, including Meta and OpenAI, are now emphasizing business use cases. Meta's Muse, while personal, has a version for small businesses, and OpenAI's Dots integrates with professional tools. Anthropic appears to be doubling down on this B2B strategy with its new release.
Security and control are key features of the new agent. Anthropic states that Duet proactively monitors ongoing tasks and delivers recommendations as they become relevant. For sensitive actions, such as making online purchases through Stripe’s Link or Shopify’s Shop Pay, the agent will require explicit user approval. However, the company clarified that Duet will not trade securities or move money between bank accounts, setting clear boundaries for its financial capabilities.
To address privacy concerns, the company introduced a new classifier that checks each message to prevent sensitive data from leaking. By default, the agent is programmed to turn down requests for credit card numbers or government identification. This layer of defense is intended to reassure business users that their confidential information is being handled with caution.
Claude Duet is currently available in a research preview. It is accessible as an app on both iOS and Android devices, as well as on the web through Claude.ai. Access is currently limited to Pro and Max customers who have joined the waitlist, suggesting that the company is testing the product with a select group of users before a wider public rollout.
